Just read an old Detroit Diesel manual and the torque spec for a 6V92 head bolt was way lower than I expected

It was only 200 foot pounds. I found it in a manual from the 80s at the shop library. I always thought those big two stroke heads needed way more clamp. Has anyone else run into old specs that seem off by modern standards?

Actually, that 200 ft-lbs spec is probably CORRECT for the initial torque. The trick is they used a TORQUE-TO-YIELD method with those special washers. You'd hit that torque, then turn the bolt another 90 or 120 degrees. The manual from that era should have a second step listed.

Yeah, 200 ft-lbs does sound low for that size engine. Could it be a misprint or maybe they used a different tightening sequence? What does the manual say about re-torquing after a heat cycle?

You ever actually torqued a head bolt?
