Old timer told me to trust the air test over the gauge, he was right and it bugs me
So last month I had a Peterbilt 579 in the shop throwing a low boost code. The digital gauge showed 28 psi, which looked fine to me, but the owner kept saying it felt gutless going up I-70 near Denver. This old timer, Gary, who's been doing Cummins work since the 80s, said to ignore the gauge and do an air test on the charge air cooler. I thought he was being dramatic, so I ran my regular diagnostics and even swapped the MAP sensor. Took me 2 extra days and the code kept coming back. Finally I did his air test at 20 psi and found a hairline crack on the passenger side cooler seam, right where the bracket rubs. New cooler fixed it in one afternoon. Now I'm wondering, how many of us are too hooked on sensor readings and not enough on basic manual checks? Has anyone else had a trusted old school trick beat their high tech gear, or is it just luck with that guy?

Drop the idea it was luck. Gary's trick worked because boost leaks hide behind sensor readings, and a gauge only tells you what the computer thinks, not what's actually happening in the pipes. Next time a code doesn't match the feel, do the simple check first, it saves you days and a new MAP sensor.
