Our shop's old air compressor finally let go on a Tuesday morning

The Ingersoll Rand we had since 1998 threw a rod right before a fleet of Peterbilts came in for brake jobs, and I spent 6 hours swapping in a rented unit from a rental place in Tulsa while the guys stood around waiting.

That IR 80 gallon was a workhorse for us too until the unloader valve seized and took out the whole pump. Renting is fine for a day but those Tulsa guys will bleed you dry if you need it a week. Honestly, the smartest thing we did was keep a spare magnetic starter and a set of check valves on the shelf. You can rebuild most of those old compressors with a basic tool kit if you catch the problem early, a thrown rod is a different beast though. Check the oil every single Monday morning like it's a religion, that's the only thing that saved ours from the same fate a few times.
