The old timer who said to stop using ether on glow plugs
I used to fire up cold Cummins with a blast of ether every winter, thought it was normal. Last month a retired fleet guy in Boise watched me do it and just laughed, said I was asking for a bent rod. He showed me how the cylinder wash gets worse and the glow plugs burn out twice as fast. He had records from over 300 trucks that proved it, so I did a test on my own rig, 32 starts with and without ether. Now I only crank slow and let the grid heater work, havent had a no-start all week. Has anyone else switched over after swearing by the spray for years?
