Vent: That week I swore I'd never touch another Detroit Diesel 8.2L

Got a call from a farm outside Topeka for a dead irrigation pump engine. Spent four days chasing a no-start, replaced the injection pump, and still nothing. The owner finally mentioned he'd stored it over winter with regular diesel, not the red stuff. The entire fuel system was gummed solid with algae. Had to pull and clean every line and the tank. Ever seen a fuel filter you could plant flowers in?

Oh yeah, that "plant flowers in" line got me. I've pulled filters that looked like a science experiment gone wrong. The algae buildup is no joke, especially when they use regular diesel in cold weather. It's like the fuel system becomes a petri dish.

Ran into the same thing with a generator once, what a nightmare that was.

3 years of that mess @angela_harris, and I'd still take algae over water in the fuel tank.

That whole "store it with the wrong fuel" thing is just another example of how people think all diesel is the same until something goes wrong. It's like using the cheap all-purpose flour for a delicate cake recipe and wondering why it turns out like a brick. The 8.2L already has a bad reputation for being finicky, but half the problems I've seen with them trace back to somebody cutting a corner on fuel or maintenance.
