Always hated digital brushes that tried to look like real paint... then I tried one from a guy in Portland
I used to think those fancy digital brushes that mimic oil or watercolor were just gimmicks. Last month at a friend's studio in Portland, he handed me his tablet with this custom brush pack he got from a local artist. I spent like 20 minutes just making marks on a canvas layer, and it actually felt close to pushing paint around. The way the color blended and picked up texture was way more natural than I expected. Still not gonna ditch my solid round brush for linework though. Has anyone else found a brush pack that actually changed how they work?

That Mike in Portland, is he the same guy who does those brush sets based on specific paper types? I heard there was someone up there matching brushes to different brands of watercolor paper.

The whole matching tools to specific surfaces thing is getting into everything now. My neighbor was telling me he bought a special ink pen set specifically for writing on recycled paper, because regular pens bleed all over it.

Man the Portland brush pack is legit, I grabbed one from a guy named Mike at a print fair last year. The way it loads up pigment and leaves tiny dry spots feels EXACTLY like painting on cold press paper. I mainly do character sketches but now I'm doing full color pieces I never would have tried before. Still wouldn't use it for tight lineart though, that's asking for trouble.
