Have you tried stepping back from your work for a few days and then looking at it fresh? I understand how you feel, I really do. It stings when someone close to you says something that makes you question all the hard work you put into learning your craft. That "too clean" comment would bother me too, because clean and smooth takes just as much practice as messy and textured. The thing is, there's no right or wrong way to make digital art.
