Just figured out a better way to organize my art layers
I kept losing track of which layer had the shading on my bigger pieces. Then last week I started naming every single layer with a color code prefix like 'BG_sky' or 'CHAR_hair'. It took me 5 extra seconds per layer but now I never accidentally paint on the wrong layer. Has anyone else found a naming system that works for them?

Honestly sounds like overkill dude. If you can't remember which layer is which after a few hours of work maybe the problem isn't the naming system.

Jason is right that you shouldn't need a PhD in layer naming to get your work done. But I've definitely spent 15 minutes scrolling through "Layer 34 copy 6" wondering what I was thinking at 2 AM the night before. My system is color coding the layer groups - red for things that need to be deleted, yellow for things I'm not sure about. It's not fancy but it stops me from accidentally hiding the wrong stuff and then panicking.

Oh man, "red for things that need to be deleted" sounds like a battlefield strategy for designers who live dangerously. I respect it. Though I gotta say, if I color coded everything yellow that I'm unsure about, my whole project would look like a school bus. Jason over here acting like we all have perfect memory after staring at a screen for 10 hours straight. Easy for him to say when his layers probably have names like "final_v3_actually_final_v2.
