Looking back at my first digital art tablet, a $300 Intuos I barely used

I spent way too much on a pro-level tablet right out of the gate, thinking the gear would make me a better artist, only to realize after six months of it collecting dust that I should have started with a cheap used one to see if I even liked the process.

Oh man, I read this article once that called it "gear fear." Like @kimr74 said, it's everywhere. People buy the best running shoes before their first jog, or a full kitchen set before they can boil pasta. It's this weird hope that the stuff does the work for you. My cousin got a $2000 camera for a trip to Europe. He used auto mode the whole time and now it just sits on a shelf.

Ugh, this is the story for so many hobbies. People buy the expensive gear first, hoping it will give them skill or motivation. It usually just gives you a fancy paperweight.

Honestly it feels like a whole life thing now, not just hobbies. People get the perfect planner before making a single to-do list, or the fancy workout clothes before ever hitting the gym. It's like we're trying to buy the feeling of being a person who does the thing, instead of just doing the thing. Makes you wonder why we're so scared to just start with what we have.

Totally get that. I started with a cheap guitar from a pawn shop when I wanted to learn. Played that thing for a year until my fingers stopped hurting. Only then did I even know what kind of nicer guitar I actually wanted. If I'd bought the fancy one first, I'd have just been staring at it feeling guilty.
