Showcasing my wacom piece vs. tablet sketch, the gallery picked the rough one

Last month I put two versions of the same dragon portrait into a local digital showcase in Austin, one was fully polished with lighting and textures, the other was just a messy 40-minute sketch with visible construction lines. The judges picked the sketch and wrote that it had more life, so now I'm wondering if anyone else has had a raw piece beat their finished work at a show and what that says about how we present art.
