Dropped $3,000 on a link building service that burned me bad

Back in 2018 I hired this outfit from India that promised 50 high quality backlinks for $3,000. Turns out they were just spamming my site with links from PBNs and private blog networks that got me hit with a manual penalty 4 months later. Anyone else get burned by cheap link building and switch to something that actually worked?

Spent way too long chasing shortcuts myself before I realized the whole thing is just like trying to get rich quick. You know how everyone wants that one magic trick to fix their problems but the real answer is boring and takes forever. I finally started doing guest posts on actual real sites in my niche and reaching out to bloggers personally. Took me like 6 months to get 20 good links but my site never got penalized and actually started ranking steady instead of bouncing around.

Did those 20 links come mostly from a few strong domains or was it spread across a bunch of smaller sites? Curious if you saw better results from one or two heavy hitters versus the long tail of smaller blogs. Always wondering what actually moves the needle in the long run.

Heard Matt Cutts talk about this exact scam years ago on his blog.
