Looking back, I had to choose between building a huge email list or focusing on a small, super-targeted one for our niche.
I went with the small list, and after 18 months, our open rates are over 60% and we landed our three biggest retainer clients directly from it, so what's the biggest list size you've seen that still performed well?

The open rate is a good sign, but list size alone doesn't tell the full story. A list of 50,000 can perform terribly if it's full of unengaged people. The real metric is how many people actually take the action you want, not just open an email. A smaller, responsive list will always beat a big, cold one.

Exactly. Quality over quantity every time.

Ever think bigger was always better? My tiny list changed my mind fast.

Totally agree about a smaller, responsive list beating a big, cold one. I had a list of about 2,000 that brought in more sales than a bloated 10,000 person list I inherited, just like @sarah_fisher49 said. The tiny one was all people who actually asked for my stuff.
