Can we talk about how I wasted 2 years booking flights wrong?

I used to always book the cheapest flight I could find, even if it meant a 14 hour layover in some random airport. Then last month I spent 18 hours stuck in the Istanbul airport with no sleep and missed a client call. My buddy finally told me I should pay $50 more for a direct flight and it literally saved me a whole day. Has anyone else realized they've been making travel harder than it needs to be?

Man, did you end up getting any sleep at all in that airport? Honestly, I learned that lesson the hard way too - those cheap flights end up costing you way more in the long run.

Wow, "those cheap flights end up costing you way more" - I can't believe how true that is! @wade871, I actually got about two hours of sleep on a bench near gate B12, using my backpack as a pillow. It was a rude awakening when a janitor started mopping right next to me at 4 AM. The worst part was when I added up the cost of airport coffee, a sad sandwich, and ibuprofen for the neck pain - it came to almost what a direct flight would have been. You'd think airlines would be upfront about these layovers, but they just hide it in the fine print. Now I always check the total travel time and connection quality before clicking buy, no matter how good the price looks.
