Got locked out of my bank account in Chiang Mai because of a VPN

I was trying to pay for a co-working space in Thailand last month and my bank flagged the login as suspicious since I was using a VPN set to Singapore. It took two days of calls to get it unlocked. What's your go-to method for handling banking security alerts while moving around?

Did you have to call your bank's international number or were you able to sort it out through their regular customer service line? That sounds like a huge hassle. I always try to remember to turn my VPN off before any banking app login now, but it's easy to forget.

Oh man, I used to think VPNs were harmless for banking too, but this mess proved me wrong.

Yeah, that's why I just use mobile data for banking now...

My friend in Tokyo had his account frozen three times in a week just from normal travel, no VPN. It made me realize the real problem is banks using location as the only red flag. Like @miles_hall said, mobile data helps, but your IP still jumps around. I started setting up travel notices and also using my bank's text message codes for every login, even if it's a pain. That way the security check is tied to my phone, not just where the internet signal looks like it's coming from.
