I finally understood the importance of a backup SIM card after my phone got pickpocketed in Barcelona and I was locked out of my work email for a full day.

Has anyone else found a solid, cheap way to keep a spare data plan active just in case?

Doubt it's that serious, but jason_lewis3 makes a fair point.

You ever notice how we're all one lost phone away from being totally cut off? I just use a cheap prepaid sim from my grocery store, costs like five bucks a month to keep it alive.

That "one lost phone away" line really hits home. I used to think keeping my main number tied to a fancy plan was safe, but jason_lewis3 has a point. If you drop that phone in a puddle, you're locked out of everything while you wait for a new one. A backup sim is just a few bucks for a lot of peace of mind. It seems obvious now, but it never crossed my mind before.
