My buddy in Lisbon told me to always book a place for at least a week before committing to a month, and I ignored him and got stuck in a tiny, loud apartment in Medellin for 30 days.

Has anyone else learned this lesson the hard way and have a good system for vetting spots now?

Yep, that's a thirty day alarm clock.

Oof, that's rough, and matthewdixon's idea is smart.

Read a blog that suggested checking the exact location on Google Street View first (you can spot a lot of potential issues that way).

street view is a good call but what about the noise situation? did your buddy mention anything about checking the building construction or what floors to avoid? seems like a concrete building vs wood frame makes a huge difference in how loud things get.
