TIL using a local SIM instead of global roaming cut my internet costs by 60%

I was paying $80 a month for a global eSIM in Bangkok and switched to a local AIS SIM for $30 after a guy at a coworking space told me about it. After two weeks, my video calls stopped stuttering and I saved enough to cover a nice dinner. Has anyone else found a big difference switching to local carriers in Southeast Asia?

OH WOW that's a HUGE difference! But does the local SIM lock you into a contract or let you truly stay flexible month to month like the eSIM does?

Gotta love saving money just by realizing I've been getting ripped off for years.

Jennifer, the only thing locked in here is my wallet staying closed.

Actually local SIMs in Thailand are almost always prepaid, so no contract at all. You just top up when you need to. AIS, TrueMove, and dtac all do month to month packages you can activate through their apps. I've been using a dtac prepaid SIM in Chiang Mai for six months and just refill like 500 baht every few weeks. Way more flexible than any eSIM I've dealt with.
