Heard a home inspector say "drywall screws aren't for hanging shelves" and had to rethink my whole garage setup

He pointed out that drywall screws have brittle heads that snap under shear load, so I spent 3 hours last Saturday swapping out every shelf bracket in my garage with proper wood screws - has anyone else discovered something basic they were doing totally wrong for years?

Drywall screws have that great superpower of breaking clean in half just as you lean on a shelf you thought was secure. Found out the hard way when a box of old paint cans ended up on the garage floor instead of the pegboard. Now I sleep better knowing my drill bits outnumber my drywall screw stash three to one.

Flip those drywall screws around and use them as dowel pins for jigs and templates. They're actually perfect for aligning drill holes since they snap off flush and won't spin like a real dowel.

Tbh @avery_jackson hit the nail on the head with that drywall screw failure story. Once you see one of those snap in half under load it sticks with you forever. What worked for me was switching to Spax or Deckmate screws for anything structural, they've got way thicker shanks and won't let you down. Also grab a little tub of construction adhesive for the brackets too, it saves your studs from getting chewed up by overdriving screws. Nothing worse than nursing a bad back after a shelf collapse.
