My neighbor Bob just said something that made me rethink all those hours I spent on drywall

He watched me sanding for the third time and just said 'you know they made powered tools for that in the 90s right' and now I'm wondering how many weekends I wasted with a hand sander, anyone else still doing things the hard way without realizing it?

You're missing how satisfying it is to feel that paper smooth under your hand after doing it yourself, power tools just rush the craft part out of it. Idk, maybe it's just me, but there's something about putting in the manual labor that makes the finished wall feel earned. Bob can keep his 90s dust cloud while you get a clean finish without the swirls an orbital leaves behind.

So you're telling me you think a little hand sanding gives you some kind of spiritual connection to the wall, but what about the rest of the house? Bob's probably got a garage full of tools you don't know about, right? Like, is he out there mixing mud with a hand trowel or did he buy that little drill attachment that does it in 30 seconds? Makes you wonder what else you're missing out on while you're "feeling" the craft. I mean, do you still cut studs with a handsaw too, or is it just the sanding that's sacred?

Nail it with a cordless saw and move on, you know? Mixing mud by hand is just wasting time when a drill attachment does it cleaner and faster. Maybe the real craft is knowing when to use the right tool for the job, not romanticizing the hard way.
