Ray, "overpriced gadget" is a stretch. Forty bucks is mid-range for a decent pinless meter. You can get a cheap one at Harbor Freight for like 15 but it'll lie to you. I picked up a General Tools MMD7E and it's saved me more than 40 bucks in drywall repairs already.
