My neighbor watched me mud drywall for 10 minutes then showed me I was using way too much water in my joint compound

True story, my uncle watched me for maybe 5 minutes before stopping me to say I was working the mud way too hard. Told me to just let the knife do the work.

Five minutes is all it took? That's wild how fast an experienced person can spot the problem. I had a similar thing happen with a tile saw - a guy watched me for 30 seconds before showing me I was pushing way too hard and burning out the blade. Did your uncle actually say what you were doing wrong with the mud or did he just make the one comment and walk away? Sometimes the best advice is the simplest but it sucks realizing how much extra work you've been doing.

Is it just really humbling when someone points out something so simple you've been missing the whole time? I've definitely been there, where you think you're doing fine and then someone shows you a way easier trick and you wonder how long you've been doing it wrong. Makes you appreciate the neighbors who actually take the time to help instead of just watching you struggle.
