PSA: My deck's ledger board was fine last fall, but after the winter it's pulling away from the house. Check yours before grilling season.

Remember that deck collapse video that went around a few years back? I still think about it every time I walk on mine.

That "pulling away from the house" happened to my neighbor's deck last year too.

My friend's deck in Bakersfield had the same issue, @allen.kai. The ledger board wasn't flashed right and water got behind it for years. They ended up having to replace the whole frame.

Hold up, I gotta push back a little here. @ryan_shah38, I get what you're saying about flashing, but not every deck pull-away is from water damage or bad installation. Sometimes it's just the ground settling or seasonal wood movement doing its thing. My own deck has a tiny gap from the house in summer when the wood dries out, then it closes right back up in winter. Not everything is a full-on disaster waiting to happen - some of these "warnings" just scare homeowners into replacing stuff that's fine.
