That $80 smart thermostat was a complete waste

Installed it last weekend and after 3 days of fighting with the app, I went back to my old manual one. Has anyone else just given up on these smart home gadgets?

A buddy of mine tried one of those Nest thermostats last year. He spent an entire Saturday getting it set up with the app only to find out it kept turning the heat on at 3 AM because of some schedule he didn't set. After a week of waking up in a sauna, he ripped it off the wall and gave it to his neighbor's kid as a toy. The kid uses it to play spaceship now.

Did your buddy try resetting the thing before he gave up on it? My sister had a similar issue with a fancy coffee maker that kept brewing at 4 AM, turned out the previous owner had set a timer she never saw... she ended up using it as a plant stand.
