That chat with my plumber neighbor about PEX fittings
My neighbor Bob who's been a plumber for 30 years saw me sweating copper pipes in my driveway last Saturday and just started laughing. He told me he hasn't touched a torch for residential work in over a decade and showed me his whole PEX setup with those crimp rings. I pushed back at first saying copper lasts longer but he laid out the numbers: I spent $85 on copper fittings for one bathroom versus $22 for equivalent PEX fittings at the same hardware store. Has anyone else made the switch and regretted it or am I just being stubborn about old methods?

Fits with how everything's getting simpler and cheaper these days, my FIL still swears by his cast iron skillet while the rest of us are using nonstick pans and getting dinner done faster. Your mileage may vary but I see that same stubbornness in a lot of hobbies where the old way worked fine, just costs more time and money.

Isn't the whole point of hobbies that they're supposed to cost time and money because that's what makes them worth doing?
