The great drywall screw debate that took me 6 months to figure out

I spent half a year sinking drywall screws way too deep, leaving these big craters I'd have to fill with 3 coats of mud. It wasn't until my buddy Dave came over to help hang some sheets in my garage in Tulsa and said 'dude you're dimpling them like a golf ball' that I realized I wasn't supposed to break the paper. Has anyone else gone through a whole project before learning a basic trick like this?

The second time I remodeled my bathroom I finally learned you're supposed to let PVC primer dry before gluing. First time I slapped it all together wet and those joints leaked like a sieve. I think this happens with everything people try to teach themselves. We all think we figured out the shortcut or the right way, but really we just missed the basic instruction manual because nobody reads those. It's like learning to cook from YouTube shorts and wondering why your chicken is raw in the middle. The internet lets us skip the boring fundamentals and then we spend six months fixing the mess we made.
