The way people finish bathroom trim around tile drives me nuts

I helped my buddy grout his shower niche last weekend and he just wanted to caulk the gap between the tile and the wood trim like it was no big deal. Every rental I manage has peeling caulk lines there because nobody primes the wood first or leaves an expansion gap. Why do so many DIYers skip the primer step on trim that sits right next to wet tile?

ok but hear me out - if you just use a good quality silicone caulk it'll flex enough that the primer thing barely matters. i've done bathrooms with zero primer on the trim and they're still holding up years later. people just buy the cheapest caulk at home depot and then wonder why it fails.

Good silicone caulk makes a big difference. Used the GE Silicone II on my own bathroom trim five years ago. Never primed anything. Still looks brand new. Nothing is cracking or peeling. People grab the $2 tub from the hardware store and blame the product when it fails. Spend the extra couple bucks. It pays off.

Right @kim.jake, I grabbed the GE stuff too and it's still perfect after four years with no primer, totally agree.
