Why does nobody talk about how hard it is to patch drywall in a popcorn ceiling?

Spent 6 hours last weekend fixing a hole in my living room ceiling in Phoenix and the texture still looks like a bad pizza crust, has anyone else found a trick for matching that lumpy pattern without making a mess everywhere?

Oh man, SIX HOURS?! That is brutal, I can't even imagine that patience level. The popcorn ceiling texture is honestly like the worst invention ever for home repairs, especially here in Phoenix where the heat makes the mud dry out in five minutes flat. You basically have to mix up a batch of lightweight joint compound with some water so it's thinner than normal, then dab it on with a sponge or a stiff brush and practice on a piece of cardboard first. The real secret is you have to let it dry completely and then lightly sand the peaks down or the pattern looks like you attacked it with a fork.

Oh man tell me about it, linda_dixon49. The heat here in Vegas is just as bad with the mud. I tried that sponge trick once and ended up with what looked like a giant bumpy lizard skin ceiling instead of popcorn. Totally agree on practicing on cardboard first, that would've saved me a weekend of scraping and redoing the whole thing.

Vegas heat turned my living room ceiling into what looked like a failed science experiment with that sponge method too. I swear my popcorn texture ended up looking like pizza dough that got attacked by a toddler.
