Update: Chose a 0.3mm lead holder over a 0.5mm for a tight site plan detail last week.

The thinner line was way easier to control for the tiny property line notes, but I went through three leads in an hour. Anyone have a lead holder that's tough on breakage?

Three leads in an hour sounds like a you problem.

Ever think maybe it's the lead that's the problem? Some brands are just brittle and break if you look at them wrong. A grocery list needs pressure for clear letters, that's not a user error. I've had packs where every single lead snapped under normal writing. Blaming the person ignores that maybe the product just sucks.

Back in my drafting days I used a 0.5mm Pentel and snapped three leads in a row just trying to get a straight line. Turned out the clutch was dirty and the lead wasn't feeding right. A quick clean with a toothpick and some compressed air fixed it. Also check if you're pushing the advance button too far, that can jam the internal mechanism. Sometimes it's the tool, sometimes it's technique, but three in an hour usually means something mechanical.

My 0.3mm lead snapped twice just writing a grocery list.
