Dream logic debate: Can you trust a locked door in a dream?

I think the debate comes down to whether your dream is a horror one or a normal one. In my dreams, if I'm scared, locks are useless. But if I'm just going about my day, they work fine. What about you all? Do your dreams have a consistent rule for locks, or does it change based on the situation? I need to settle this because I had a dream last night where I locked my front door and I'm still not sure if I was actually safe or just pretending.

yeah thats a solid way to look at it, the fear just overrides everything. honestly if you're still questioning if you were safe in the dream, your brain already decided you weren't. next time try to focus on something else in the dream instead of the lock, like a window or a noise, and see if your anxiety follows that instead. locks in dreams are just props, the real threat is whatever your brain already decided to throw at you.

Locks are useless" - that's my experience too when things get weird. But your question about being actually safe hit me hard. I had a dream once where I locked my office door with three deadbolts and a chair under the handle, and I still spent the whole dream hiding under my desk. So maybe the lock itself isn't as important as whether your brain decides you're supposed to feel trapped or not.

Youre close but that dream says more about the situation than the locks themselves. A dream is your brain running through worst case scenarios for free, so of course you felt trapped even with three deadbolts. But in real life a lock still matters, even if it cant fix the fear part. @reed.elliot the thing is feeling safe and being safe are two different things. A good lock buys you time and a better chance to stay alive while your brain fights its own panic. So dont throw the locks out just because the fear doesnt always obey them. Theyre still better than nothing when the actual threat shows up.
