Rant: The dream about my aunt's basement last week is still messing with me

Last Tuesday I dreamed I was in my aunt Linda's basement off Maple Street in Portland, and the rule was you had to clap three times before turning on any light or the whole room would fill with sand... I woke up and actually clapped before flipping the switch in my own house. Has anyone else had a dream rule that stuck with you like that?

Wait did you actually clap before flipping the switch in your own house? I did the same thing after a dream where I had to say "bless you" to every object before touching it or it would turn into spiders. For like a week I was muttering "bless you" to my coffee mug and toothbrush. Honestly what helped me was I started writing the dream down as soon as I woke up, got it out of my head so it wouldn't stick around. Also try forcing yourself to do something different the next time you wake up from a dream like that, clap your hands together instead of three times or something, break the pattern before it becomes a habit.

I get what you're saying about breaking the pattern, but in my experience trying to force a different ritual just gave me two things to remember instead of one. That "bless you" thing sounds exhausting though, I can see why you wanted to shake it. For me it worked better to just lean into the weirdness and let it fade on its own. I stopped fighting the clapping and after a few days my brain got bored and moved on.

Oh man, that's actually a really good point. I notice that in regular life too, like when I try to force myself to remember something it just makes me more stressed and I end up forgetting more. But if I just let it slide, usually it comes back to me later or I just move on.
