A client told me my logo designs looked like clip art, so I changed my whole process

I was pitching a logo to a small coffee shop in Portland and the owner said it just felt like something off a stock site. She said it word for word, my designs looked like clip art. I realized I was relying too much on basic shapes and default fonts. So I started sketching everything by hand first and scanning it in. Has anyone else had a critique that totally shifted how you work?

A buddy of mine got told her logos looked like ransom notes and she redid everything from scratch too.

Laughing at myself here because my first attempt at a logo looked like a middle schooler's ransom note too. Ended up scrapping the whole thing after someone asked if I was running a crime ring or a business. Sometimes starting over is the kindest thing you can do for your brand lol.
