Fair trade sounds great. Making it work is another story.

Certification costs can kill small producers trying to go fair trade, @ninaowens. Read about a coffee co-op that almost folded from the fees alone. The idea's solid but the setup needs real work.

Read about a bean farmer in Guatemala who paid like $2k just to start the process. That's brutal for a small operation. Totally see what @ninaowens means about it being harder than it looks.

Come on, the fees are an investment. That certification gets them way higher prices for their crops long term. It's tough at the start but it pays off.
