I finally admitted my dream of being a carpenter was never going to happen after I botched a simple bookshelf for the third time.

Tried framing a basic 3-shelf unit last summer and after $150 in lumber and three failed attempts my wife just bought one from IKEA, so has anyone else hit that moment where you realize some skills just aren't in you no matter how bad you want them?

Wait, did you do any practice builds before jumping into the $150 lumber and the final bookshelf project? Like, I feel like so many people skip the super basic stuff and then get crushed when the finished product doesn't match the YouTube video they watched. I've seen a ton of people quit woodworking because they started with something way too hard for their first real attempt.

Mine's currently a very expensive, slightly crooked coat rack.

You mentioned the part about skipping the super basic stuff and that really hit home. I used to think you could just watch a few videos and wing it if you had the guts and good intentions, but now I totally get that you gotta earn your stripes with the boring projects first. My first real attempt was a birdhouse that looked more like a pigeon prison, and I thought that was good enough prep for a dining table. That table ended up as firewood, and I finally understood why people start with cutting boards and simple boxes. It's like learning to play guitar by jumping straight into a solo, you just end up frustrated and broke.
