I tried to learn guitar by myself for a year, then took a single lesson in Austin.

Yeah, I wasted months on bad fingerpicking form before a teacher caught it.

Honestly, that first lesson after a year on your own is a special kind of wake-up call. Tbh I spent months thinking my version of "Smoke on the Water" was fine, then a teacher in like five minutes showed me my hand was in the wrong spot the whole time. Felt like I had to unlearn everything just to start over. Ngl it was a hit to the ego but probably saved me another year of weird, bad habits.

That feeling when you realize you've been doing it wrong the whole time is brutal lol. Happened to me trying to learn a song from a tab online, had the rhythm totally backwards. A good teacher spots that stuff instantly and it's so worth it, even if it stings at first. Saves you from getting stuck in a rut you don't even know you're in.

Watch a pro fix your mess in seconds, it's humbling.
