Talked to my uncle about why he never finished building that boat in his garage

Saw him at a family gathering last weekend and asked about the half-finished hull that's been sitting there since I was a kid. He said he realized halfway through he didn't actually want a boat, he just liked the idea of building one. That hit different because I've been doing the same thing with learning guitar for three years. Bought a nice acoustic, took lessons for six months, now it just sits in the corner. Has anyone else found out they were chasing the dream of the dream instead of the real thing?

Oh man, that hits way too close to home... I have a garage full of half-finished projects that I was more excited about starting than actually finishing.

Right, the dopamine hit of starting something new is way stronger than the grind of finishing it. That's just how our brains work with new stuff, it's all about that rush. Maybe just pick one thing and get it 80% done, better than having ten things at 10%.

Does anyone else have a collection of half-read books scattered around the house for the same reason? I bought a woodworking book last year, got through chapter two, and now it's holding up a wobbly table leg. That's probably not what the author intended. But you're right about the 80% rule. I've got an old guitar with three strings missing that I swore I'd restring last summer. At this point it's more of a decoration than anything musical.
