That $60 sewing machine I bought on a whim a year ago finally paid for itself last week
My kid tore a hole in his favorite jacket and I fixed it in like 15 minutes instead of throwing it out or paying someone. I bought the machine off Facebook Marketplace when I was bored and dreaming of making my own clothes, which never happened. But fixing that one jacket saved me probably $40 or more on a replacement. Has anyone else bought something for a dream hobby that ended up being useful in a totally different way?

Got a similar story with a cheap air fryer I bought thinking I'd make all these elaborate crispy snacks from scratch. Turns out I use it almost every day just to reheat leftover pizza and chicken wings so they're not soggy. It's saved me so much money on takeout since I'm not buying fast food just to get that crunchy texture back. The $40 fryer has probably paid for itself ten times over in the last year with all the reheated leftovers that actually taste good again.

Bought a fancy dehydrator for jerky, now I use it mostly for drying herbs from my garden.

Read this thing the other day about how most specialty kitchen gadgets end up getting used for one or two basic things instead of what people originally bought them for. That dehydrator sounds exactly like that, herbs from the garden is such a smart use though, way more practical than making jerky every weekend. My neighbor has one of those expensive juicers collecting dust because she realized she hates cleaning it. Actually kind of freeing when you stop forcing yourself to use a gadget the "right" way and just let it do whatever task makes your life easier.
