Just realized how much silt a small cutterhead can move in an hour
I was looking at the pump logs from a job on the Ohio River last month. The numbers showed we moved over 400 cubic yards in a single 8-hour shift with a 12-inch cutter. I always thought the big suction dredges did all the heavy lifting. Anyone else been surprised by their machine's output?

Wow, that's a serious amount of material for a 12-inch cutter.

My buddy had a similar shock with his 10-inch setup, and @keith900 is right, those numbers really add up fast.

Actually, that "10-inch setup" comment made me look twice. A 10-inch cutter would be way too small for 12-inch material, so the numbers wouldn't line up at all. The math only gets scary when the tool size matches the job.
