Old timer told me to run my cutter chain loose, not tight. I ignored him for a year.

Finally tried it last month on a tough sand bar job and the cutter barely bogged down. Has anyone else been set straight by a veteran operator on something basic like this?

Read an old forum thread once where a guy said loose chains let the cutter self-sharpen on the sand instead of grinding metal on metal. Tried it on a rocky patch last week and my bar actually stayed cooler than before. Definitely one of those things I wish someone drilled into me on day one.

Read an article once from an old dredge operator about chain tension. He said too tight just grinds the chain into the bar and wastes power. Makes sense now that I tried it loose on that sand bar, the difference was night and day. Had to retune my brain after years of thinking tight was better.

My buddy runs a small dredging outfit and swore by tight chains for years until his old man showed up on site, loosened it a full turn, and the machine ran smoother than it ever had. He said it felt like he'd been fighting the equipment the whole time for nothing.
