That time I hit a buried pipeline near Galveston and learned the hard way about utility maps
Was running a 12-inch cutterhead in the ship channel when we snagged something that blew a hydraulic line. Now I always double check the dig permits before the first pass, anyone else had close calls with unmarked lines?

Second that about the GPS, @jana_jones - I've seen the same thing mess up a whole job.

Rusty old maps are only half the problem, it's the GPS coordinates that lie worse than the paper ones.

Hold on, is it really that bad though? I've been using GPS for years and yeah, it's sent me down a dirt road or two but nothing that ruined my whole day. Paper maps were worse in my book, at least GPS gets you within spitting distance more often than not. Maybe it depends on where you live or what you're doing, but for getting to a random diner or a buddy's new place, I've never had it totally lie to me. It's more like a minor inconvenience than a full on disaster, at least in my experience.
