Got a weird hump in a ceiling and a piece of scrap 2x4 saved the day

Tbh, I was hanging board in this old house in Dayton and the ceiling joists were all over the place. There was this one spot with a half-inch hump that just wouldn't lay flat. I had a short piece of 2x4 left from framing a soffit, so I cut a wedge off it and screwed it to the high side of the joist to build it out level with the low side. Ngl, it took maybe 15 minutes and the board went up smooth. Anyone got a better fix for a joist that's out of whack like that?

What about using a belt sander first?

Yeah @wood.eric, that glue trick is clutch for stuff like that too.

Yeah, that wedge trick is solid. I mean, sometimes you just have to sister in a new piece of joist if it's really bad, but for a quick fix like that, idk, it works.

Totally agree about the wedge trick! My buddy had a squeaky floor right under his kitchen table. He hammered in some wood glue-coated shims last fall and it's been dead quiet ever since. He was so happy he didn't have to rip up the floor. It's still holding up perfectly.
