Overheard a commercial GC say "tape and float is for houses" and it got me thinking
Was grabbing lunch at a Subway near a job site and two older guys at the next table were talking. One said he bids tape and float at $1.20 a foot but he only does it for residential builders now. Said commercial is all about level 5 finish or nothing. Made me wonder if I'm leaving money on the table sticking with one market. Anybody else bounce between residential and commercial work or do you pick a lane?

Best move I ever made was starting a side crew that only does residential taping and floating. Commercial work pays the bills but it's harder on the body and the timeline demands are brutal. Residential lets me work at my own pace and the customers are usually happier with the result. Used to think I had to pick one or the other but splitting it up gave me more control over my schedule and income. If you can manage two small crews or even just yourself for resi work, it's worth trying both for a while.

$1.20 a foot sounds nice until you realize your back hates you too.

Makes me think of my grandpa who laid brick for 40 years, says his hands still ache every morning. @vera_lewis2 probably knows that feeling of standing up after a long day and just hearing every joint pop. Guess we all pay for our work one way or another.
