Update: I thought those magnetic corner trowels were a gimmick, but they saved a job in Phoenix.
On a big commercial job last month, we had to tape and float a series of tight, 8-foot high soffits. My partner brought out a magnetic corner trowel, which I always thought was just an overpriced toy. After watching him zip through the inside corners in half the time it usually takes, I had to try it. The magnet held the blade perfectly in place, letting me focus on the mud. Has anyone else made the switch, or do you still swear by the old-school method?

Sounds like a good way to lose a magnet in the mud.

Actually, the whole point of magnet fishing is that you tie it off with a strong rope. You don't just toss it in loose. If you do it right, you just pull the whole thing back up, mud and all. People find some pretty cool stuff that way. It's not really about losing the magnet.

Wait you're actually throwing magnets into mud on purpose? I mean what kind of magnet are we even talking about here, idk that just sounds like a total waste. Maybe it's just me but I would never risk losing a good magnet like that.
