Why does nobody talk about using a paint roller for small texture patches?

Had a client in Phoenix who wanted a tiny patch of knockdown texture matched on a ceiling. My spray rig was way overkill for a 2 square foot area. I was about to just slap some mud on and call it a day, but I grabbed a cheap 3/4 inch nap roller from my truck. Loaded it with thinned joint compound, rolled it on, and then knocked it down with a 12 inch knife. It blended perfectly and saved me 45 minutes of cleanup. Anyone else have a weird tool they use for small texture fixes?

Roller trick is a total game changer for small spots. Why mess with the big sprayer for a patch job?

Totally agree about the roller. I keep a few cheap ones in different nap lengths just for this. You can even crinkle up a plastic bag and dab it on for a really fine orange peel effect right out of the bucket. Saves so much time not having to wash the sprayer for a five minute fix.

My first patch job with a roller looked like a failed science experiment because I used way too much mud. Now I keep telling myself it's just "artisanal texture" when I mess it up again. At least the cleanup is quick, which gives me more time to laugh at my mistakes.
