Threw $80 down the drain on a so-called waterproof jacket that leaked in the first rain

Bought that fancy breathable rain shell from a big outdoor brand and got soaked through on a 20 minute walk to the bus stop last week, so has anyone found a jacket under $100 that actually keeps you dry?

Actually I’ve had the opposite luck with cheap jackets like that @reed.skyler mentioned. My buddy picked up that same Columbia shell from an outlet for fifty bucks and the zipper broke after three wears, plus it stopped repelling water after like two months. Sometimes you really do get what you pay for, lol.

My buddy Dave bought the exact same kind of jacket from a popular brand last fall. First real downpour, he was standing at a crosswalk and felt water trickling down his back like a bad prank. He ended up drying his phone in a bag of rice because it got wet through the chest pocket. He finally got a cheap Columbia rain shell from a discount store for 50 bucks and swears it works better than anything he's ever owned. Ever try looking at the outlet stores instead of the fancy gear shops?

I read somewhere that some of these big brands actually make cheaper versions for outlet stores that work just as well. Probably got the same material without the fancy name tag.
