TIL the vending machine at my old office had a secret trick that saved me $40 a month

Everyone I worked with swore those snack machines were rigged to never give you what you paid for. I spent 6 months watching people pound the glass after their chips got stuck. One Tuesday I got fed up and tried pressing the selection button twice instead of once. Every single item dropped clean after that. I started buying two bags of pretzels at a time and never had a jam for the rest of my shift. Told three coworkers about it and they all thought I was lying until I showed them. Has anyone else found a weird button sequence that actually works on those things?

Kicking a vending machine is asking for trouble. Those things are finicky and a hard boot can mess up the internal sensors or break the locking mechanism. Better to try the double button press like the original tip suggested, it actually works without damaging anything.

My buddy Dave spent three months slapping the side of our office vending machine before someone told him to try kicking it instead. Turns out a firm boot to the lower right panel dislodges stuck chips nine times out of ten. Now he walks around the break room like some kind of vending machine sensei.
