My uncle, a retired master, told me to always check the panel schedule twice before cutting power for a kitchen remodel in a 1970s split-level, and finding that mislabeled 240v line for the oven saved my bacon yesterday.
I almost disconnected what I thought was a dead circuit for the old disposal, but his voice in my head made me trace it again and it was live, feeding the wall unit that the homeowner 'forgot' to mention they still used.

Homeowner 'forgot' to mention the wall unit, classic. It's amazing how often memory fails right when the breaker panel opens up. Good thing your uncle's voice is louder than their selective recall.

Yeah, that selective memory thing is wild. I mean, @paigep85, you're totally right. I got in the habit of just shutting off the main breaker for the whole house before I touch anything now. It's a pain to reset all the clocks, but it's better than finding out someone "forgot" about the hot tub line they added themselves. Saves a lot of yelling, for sure.

That wall unit being live after the homeowner said it was dead is exactly the kind of thing that gives me the creeps. I mean, 240 volts on something they "forgot" about - that's not forgetting, that's just hoping you won't check. Your uncle's advice probably saved you from a really bad day, maybe even a trip to the hospital. I always test everything twice with a meter now, no matter what anyone tells me. People lie, but electricity doesn't.

That 240v oven line is actually on a double pole breaker, not a single one. My old boss drilled that into me after a similar close call.
