Unpopular opinion: I used to hate dealing with old BX cable, but after a rewire in a 1920s bungalow last week, I found that a small squirt of WD-40 on the anti-short bushing makes the armor coil up way easier for a clean cut.

Has anyone else found a decent trick for that, or is there a better product I should try?

What about the leftover smell? That WD-40 stink always seems to hang around in a closed wall cavity for ages.

Ever try a drop of dish soap instead? Does the WD-40 leave any oily residue you have to clean up later?

Dish soap works fine for most squeaks. WD-40 is just a light oil, so yeah, it leaves a film. Not a big deal to wipe off later. People act like it's some huge mess. It's a hinge, not a surgery table.

I feel you on this one, that WD-40 trick is a lifesaver for old armor. @the_troy might be onto something about the smell though, I've had that hang around longer than I'd like in tight spots.
