Had a guy bring in a toaster from the 1970s last Tuesday and he argued with me for 20 minutes about how 'they don't make em like this anymore' while the heating element was literally smoking.
I had to unplug it mid-rant and show him the charred remains of the wires before he finally admitted maybe it was time for a new one... has anyone else dealt with customers refusing to let go of ancient gear?

Old gear is one thing but that guy was literally holding a fire hazard. The whole "they don't make em like this anymore" thing is fine for stuff like cast iron pans or hand tools. But electronics from the 70s are just dangerous at this point. The wiring gets brittle and the insulation breaks down over time. That toaster could have burned his house down just because he wanted to save twenty bucks. People get so attached to the idea of quality that they ignore basic safety.

Oh come on, you act like every vintage toaster is just waiting to explode. The odds of that thing catching fire are way lower than you're making it sound.

@phoenix246 I'm sitting here looking at my vintage toaster from the 70s that my grandma gave me and honestly I'm kinda scared now. You're probably right that it's not gonna explode tomorrow but I also have this mental image of it catching fire mid-toast and me just standing there with a bagel in one hand like "well this is fine." I'm not saying we need to throw out everything old but maybe I'll keep this thing unplugged when I'm not using it just in case.
