Had to pick between a $15 hot air station and a $80 one for a phone screen job

I was fixing a cracked iPhone 8 screen for a friend and my old station died mid-job. Grabbed the cheap one from the corner store, and it actually worked fine for that single repair, but the temp control was shaky. Anyone have a go-to budget brand that holds up for more than a few uses?

That "one hit wonder" thing is dead on. I grabbed a $15 one from a flea market once. First job it worked okay. Second job the knob started wobbling. Third job it just stopped heating mid-solder. Temp control is a joke at that price. If you want something that lasts, look for a used Hakko. I know it's more money. But you buy it once and forget about it. The cheap ones feel like toys because they basically are toys. You're better off spending $40 on a decent iron and a separate hot air gun than buying a combo that fails after two uses. Just my two cents from burning through three cheap stations in one year.

Honestly that corner store panic buy is a rite of passage. My buddy once fixed an Xbox with a hair dryer and a butter knife when his gear died. Thing is, those cheap stations are like a one hit wonder song. Works once, then the knob gets all loose and the display flickers. For a real beater that lasts, the Atten clones aren't terrible if you can find one. Still feels like a toy though.

Remember that time my buddy tried to fix his PS4 with a heat gun and a prayer? The whole room smelled like melting plastic and broken dreams for a week. Honestly, those cheap stations are basically held together with hope and a single loose screw. You get one good project out of them before they start acting like a haunted toaster.

Haunted toaster" is perfect. I saw a video where a guy's cheap station started making a high pitched whine and the numbers on the display just ran away, counting up on their own. It was like it had a mind of its own. He said the temperature would swing a hundred degrees either way, making any real work impossible. At that point you're not fixing things, you're just hoping not to start a fire.
