Pulled a 25 year old capacitor out of a TV and it almost took my thumb off

Was working on a 1998 Sony Trinitron in my garage last Saturday and that big 450v cap still had a hell of a charge even after letting it sit for 2 days. Broke a screwdriver trying to discharge it before I finally found my resistor pack. Anybody got a better method for safely draining old CRT caps?

Hell of a charge" is an understatement, man. I did the same thing with an old Zenith and nearly launched a screwdriver through my drywall. I finally just taped a 100W light bulb to two alligator clip wires and let it glow for a few minutes like a dumb little lantern. It's slow but at least I'm not prying metal shrapnel out of my thumb anymore.

Are folks really getting thrown around that much from old tube sets?

Did you try using a giant alligator clip on a hot dog first, I swear it works but smells terrible?
